Automotive design is an interdisciplinary profession requiring an understanding of styling, production engineering, metals and plastic technology and marketing. Although cars are objects with a primarily technological and functional purpose, they are much more than that for many of us: Roland Barthes called them ‘purely magical’. Specialists in automotive and transport design are trained at the Royal College of Art, Coventry University, Pforzheim in Germany, the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and the Art Center in Pasadena, among others.

The most important theorist and designer was William Morris.
