The transactional category includes interactions in which the speakers do not know one another, and is often found in ‘goods-and-services’ encounters where the exchange of goods is one of the main aims of the interaction (Ventola 1987). The pedagogic category includes any interaction in which the relationship between the speakers is defined by the pedagogic context, such as is the case in tutorials, seminars and lectures. The discourse episode reflects the dynamic nature of discourse in that it takes account of emerging goal-orientation and goal negotiation of participants.
