Poplack (1980) and Berk-Seligson (1986) both determined linguistic proficiency on the basis of a combination of self-report and analysis of their speakers’ sociolinguistic background. Nortier (1990) used both methods, and as a third method native speakers in the informants’ original countries were asked to judge tape-recorded fragments. The results of these different methods showed high correlations.
Judgments about bilingual structures can be rejected because mixing two languages is often considered unacceptable or ungrammatical. This conception of data as intuitions is also problematical when researching children acquiring two languages as they are also unable to express grammatical judgments, especially if they are very young. The use of performance data and statistics (frequencies) obtained from corpora of data is a good method to assure reliable grammatical theorizing (see Tokowicz & Warren, chapter 12 in this volume).
