Prior to this period most Swedish furniture was conventional and historical, more in line with the Biedermeier style it evolved from than the sleek Modernism it would eventually become (think IKEA). The 1930 Stockholm International Exhibition brought a breath of fresh Modernist air, largely in the form of Danish designer Kaare Klint and the Finnish Alvar Aalto, both of whom inspired Swedish design. The three principal names in 1930s Swedish furniture are Axel Larsson, Sven Markelius, and Bruno Mathsson.

High-quality Art Deco furniture was produced during the 1930s. A variety of products is still produced by the company, including architectural elements. De Coene Frères Flourishing in Belgium throughout the 1900s, De Coene Frères is little known outside of northern Europe. However, this firm’s best furniture rivals French Art Deco of the highest order in standards of both design and manufacture. De Coene Frères began in the late 19th century as a modest company manufacturing furniture of honest simplicity, in the provincial manner.
