Whilst the 1980s and 1990s were critical in shaping and directing the course of evolving arts-related research, the period stretching into this last decade is arguably one in which researchers have experimented and taken greater risks with the creative process, along with personal and disciplinary perspectives, letting research and creativity unfold.

This ability of the researcher’s own interconnectedness with the subject matter; the idea of ‘bricolage,’ (Savin-Baden and Major, 2013) provides an important means for the arts-related researcher to highlight relationships which become apparent through knowledge of material processes, art discourse and creative praxis. This contribution of the artistic with the investigative is illustrated in the following excerpt, by an artist-researcher as participant involved in an action research-based theatre project: As an arts-based researcher I constantly seek ways to bring art within my research.

Several recent examples of research studies using arts-informed research are briefly described below. Teaching style is very much related to the identity of the individual, yet this personal-professional identity is difficult to articulate. Victoria Campbell used oral storying with early career primary teachers to explore the development of their professional and personal identities, as well as their emerging pedagogies.
