The guard allowed himself a thin smile. 'No. Reform schools for boys. That's what they're building in some parts of the country. Strict regime. Regular birching for young criminals who misbehave. That's what's needed round here. In my opinion,' he added as he moved away. ' Mikey hadn't seen Tully since coming to the kitchens and didn't know whether or not he had been influential in the move. If he had been, then Mikey was grateful to him, for it made his life less hard and he could think of the end of his sentence as only a short time away.

The girl pressed her lips together and from wide blue eyes stared anxiously at Mikey, but said nothing. The butcher turned away. ' He glared at Mikey. ' Mikey said hastily. ' The constable reached into his pocket and brought out a pair of handcuffs. 'No excuses. We've heard 'em all before. ' I don't think she's dying; at least I hope not. But she is poorly, Mikey thought, glancing over his shoulder at the girl as he was led away. She too turned her head as the man put his hand on her shoulder and ushered her across the road.

Oh, the policeman took the one the boy had. He said it would be used in evidence. ' 'More than likely,' Nanny nodded. 'Yes, could well be so. ' Eleanor gazed wide-eyed at her. ' Nanny drained her glass. 'No, my dear. I don't. ' Eleanor asked after a moment's silence. ' 'Did he? Well, your papa would know about such things, being in law himself. But I shouldn't worry,' Nanny said kindly. 'They'll not hang him this time, and mebbe after a spell in prison he'll walk a straight line. If he's not starving, that is,' she added, and gave a little grunt as she bent to put more coal on the fire.
